A gentle first step toward more independent living
Thinking about more independent living can bring up a lot of feelings.
For some people, it is exciting. For others, it can feel a little overwhelming. Families and carers might wonder whether their loved one is ready, what support will look like, or how to take the next step without rushing into something too big.
That is where Explore Independence can help.
Explore Independence is a supported short-stay experience in Port Kembla, created for people who want to build confidence, practise everyday routines and experience what living more independently could feel like.
It is not about pressure. It is not about pushing someone before they are ready. It is about creating a safe, supportive space where a person can try new routines, learn what feels right for them and take small steps at their own pace.

Why a short stay can help
Moving towards more independent living does not need to happen all at once.
A short stay can give a person the chance to spend time away from home, with the right support around them, while still having space to learn and adjust.
During a stay, a person may have the opportunity to practise everyday routines such as preparing meals, keeping their space tidy, making decisions, managing personal routines and building confidence in a supported home environment.
For many people, these everyday moments matter. They help someone learn what they enjoy, what support they need, and what kind of living arrangement may feel right in the future.
Building confidence away from home
Confidence often grows through experience.
For someone who has not spent much time away from home, even a short stay can be a meaningful step. It can help them feel more settled, capable and prepared for future changes.
This might include learning how to follow a routine in a different environment, getting used to new support workers, trying new household tasks or simply realising that time away from home can feel safe and positive.
At Individual Me, we understand that each person moves at their own pace. Some people may feel ready to try new things quickly. Others may need time, reassurance and familiar routines. Both are okay.

Getting to know the right support
Good support should feel personal.
Explore Independence gives people the chance to understand what type of support works best for them. This can include how they like to communicate, what makes them feel comfortable, what routines matter to them and what goals they would like to work towards.
It can also help families and support networks feel more confident about future planning.
When a person has the chance to experience support in a real home environment, it can make conversations about future living options clearer and less overwhelming.
Taking steps toward Supported Independent Living
For some people, Explore Independence may be part of the journey toward Supported Independent Living.
Supported Independent Living, often called SIL, is NDIS support that helps people with day-to-day tasks at home while building independence and skills.
A short stay can be a gentle way to explore what supported living might feel like before making bigger decisions about the future.
It can help a person think about questions such as:
What routines do I want help with?
What support makes me feel safe and confident?
What kind of home environment feels right for me?
Am I ready for more independence?
What skills would I like to build next?
There is no one-size-fits-all answer. The goal is to support the person to understand what feels right for them.
